Sharma is all excited of making his Test debut on his homeground in Mumbai when India take on West Indies in the third and final game starting Tuesday.
The right-hander has been drafted in the roster in place of Yuvraj Singh, who failed to impress despite receiving numerous chances.
Sharma has been tagged as a specialist batsman for limited over cricket. Despite being part of Indian outfits for four years, the personified striker has not played a single Test match for the Men in Blue.
With a couple of good performances in the national championships for cricket, Sharma has re-earned the selector’s faith and got a call-up for the third Test and now the 24-year-old believes that it is time for him to make his mark in the longest version of the game.
“It would be really great to make a Test debut at home. I missed out when I got injured on the morning of the match,” the talented right-hander, who got injured during a game of football on the morning of the match against South Africa in February 2010, said.
“So, I am excited at the thought of getting a Test cap and to be able to get one in front of the home crowd and in home conditions would be special,” Rohit told Sportal.
Rohit, however, is aware that he might not get a chance to wear the India cap this Tuesday. With Virat Kohli certain to replace Yuvraj in the playing XI, Rohit will get a look in only if the one of the senior player is rested as India has already claimed the series.
“I am extremely happy to be part of the Indian squad again. I have had a few good games where I scored runs and the selection also tells me that my runs and my efforts are being seen and recognised by the selectors,” he said.
Rohit also believes he is more mature now as a person and cricketer.
“The best way to learn and understand things is through understanding the mistakes you have made. I have been able to do that and that has made me a better cricketer and a person.”
“I used to get out cheaply but now I understand my game better and the results can be seen. I am converting the 20s and 30s into big scores now. I have made changes to my game and have started scoring big runs consistently.”
“In the West Indies too, what I learnt from Yuvraj and MS Dhoni during my conversations with them over time helped me and I was there till the end and finishing the matches rather than playing well and getting out before India won the game,” Rohit said.
“Hence I was very eager to show in the Ranji Trophy that I have recovered from the finger injury (sustained during the first ODI on the England tour) and am completely focused on my game.”
Happy with his recent performances and pulling selectors for his national call-up, Rohit is optimistic about the future.
“I only want to think about playing for the next 10-15 years and hoping that the injuries stay away. I have suffered a lot of injuries and want them to stay away as far as possible.”
