Tim Nielsen's move aims to develop young cricketers in his home state of South Australia after quitting as coach of the national team. Nielsen will head the newly created Emerging Redback program that will allow it to return to Adelaide almost a decade after he left to become assistant to John Buchanan of Australia page.
Nielsen, 43, has spent four years with the first Australian head coach resigned this week, and test drive the success of Sri Lanka. South Australia coach Darren Berry, Nielsen said it would provide valuable experience in his new role, where he directs the high-level academy-style program, which aims to produce players in the state of cricket.
"Tim has clearly traveled the world and led to the highest level to get involved will be another string to our coaching," said Berry. "With Jeff Vaughan, Joe Dawes, Tim Nielsen me and now we believe we have got the best coaching panel in the first-class cricket in the country. I can not emphasize enough how happy I am that Tim has decided that this is the role he wanted. "
The new program is the brain child Jamie Cox, the South Australian Cricket Association, director of cricket, the national selection that has worked closely with Nielsen over the past four years. Cox said he was delighted that Nielsen has decided to return to the SACA.
"I worked closely with Tim in his time in charge of the Australian team and I have always admired his energy and passion for coaching," said Cox. "We are obviously pleased that the time of our looking for a head coach for the program Redback emerging allowed such a high quality candidate to be attracted to the role. "
The former wicketkeeper-batsman who played for South Australia for ten years, Nielsen moved to coaching after retiring as an assistant and began Redbacks. He was the head coach of Excellence in Brisbane, 2005-2007, when he changed Buchanan at the helm of the Australian side.
