Tim Southee, New Zealand and Chennai Super Kings seamer, will miss the Twenty20 Champions League after injuring his knee. It was supposed to join the team in Chennai this week, but remain in New Zealand for treatment.

"Tim has had some cartilage damage in his left knee while preparing for the Champions League." Said John Buchanan, director of New Zealand Cricket. "It also requires an assessment to determine the severity of the signs of an injury, but indicate that it is unlikely that surgery.

"He'll undergo an intensive period of rehabilitation and trying to return to training soon." Whether or not available for the trip to New Zealand in Zimbabwe next month will be announced later, Buchanan said.

Southee won the ICC Twenty20 performance of the year by the charm of 5.18 against Pakistan in Auckland. He took 74 wickets in 59 Twenty20 matches at 23.05, but was expensive, conceding 8.07 runs an over. He was in good shape at the end of Twenty20 cricket and took six for 16 people, including a hat-trick, Essex against Glamorgan in the T20-life friends in July.

Chennai, the defending champion, playing his first Champions League match on September 24.
