Paul Grayson, Essex coach, has admitted for the 2011 season fell well below the expectations of the club and he has already begun planning next summer's signing of the Derbyshire all-rounder Greg Smith.

Seventh place in the County Championship Division Two at County and not the knockout stages of the Clydesdale Bank 40 and T20 Life Friends. The team suffered from a failure to fill the void left, Danish Kaner, the legspinner Pakistan, and the first season, looking to sign Peter Siddle failed. Grayson is now looking ahead and took the performance of some young people - as legspinner Tom Craddock and right arm fast Reece Topley - a sign for a better future.

"In early 2011, I and the cricket committee in order to obtain a promotion to Division One trophy and set a day," said Grayson. "The losses in the first two games of the Championship has cost us dear, and since then we were always playing catch-up.

"There is no denying the fact that several players have been inconsistent this season," he added. "But we have a very talented team and determined with some exciting players coming through the ranks. This season saw the arrival of the likes of Reece Topley, Tymal Mills, Adam Wheater and Tom Craddock. We hope that we can further progress of young blood we have in the club and develop a winning combination that was missing in 2011.

"During the winter months the team will have a rest and prepare for what we hope will not be a 2012 season in all formats of the game. Our goal should be to promote, and this is where we want to be, and despite the comments the way the County Championship remains our number one priority. "

Smith, meanwhile, will bring some experience to the order and the average capacity of a bowl both seam and offspin. "Greg is a cricketer who I admire. He is very talented and versatile a great character in the dressing room, where I feel in our interest," said Grayson. "This is a very good cricketer that fit with the team and I look forward to working with him in Essex."
