2012 World Twenty20 will take place between September 18 and October 12, 2012 in Sri Lanka, the ICC confirmed. Colombo, Hambantota and Pallekele be places for the men's tournament while the women's group games will be played in Galle.
The format will see four groups of three in a preliminary round. England, the defending champions, and India is in Group A and will be joined by team members or affiliates are eligible. The other team will be trained in group B with the Caribbean and Australia. Sri Lanka, South Africa and Zimbabwe to make up Group C and Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh are in Group D.
The top two teams in each group will make it through the preliminary round, after which there will be a Super Eight phase, featuring two groups. The format is essentially the same as the last edition in 2010, although there are fewer than four teams this time.
The tournament will have two teams qualified for the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2012, held in the United Arab Emirates 13 March to 14 th 2012
Hosts Sri Lanka will play unit in the competition against Zimbabwe in Hambantota. England begin their defense against a skilled team, September 21 and will then play India in Colombo on September 23.
The women's event was in Australia, India and England in a group with a team of skilled and New Zealand, India, Sri Lanka West and the other team qualified in the other. Men and women in the semifinals and finals will be played on the same day in Colombo. The semifinals are Oct. 4 and 05 October with the final on October 7.
Tickets for the tournament is scheduled to go on sale to the public from 1 March 2012, and is available on the website and the box-office sales in Sri Lanka. ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat assured that it would be convenient.
"We all know how passionate and loyal audience in Sri Lanka towards the human race, and we will ensure that tickets are affordable, so they can enjoy the event," he said, to start the tournament in Colombo. "After the success of the recent ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, I'm sure the hosts, Sri Lanka, to provide world-class event."
Lorgat also said the tournament was another opportunity to promote women's cricket. "I'm glad that men and women in the semifinals and finals will be played again on the same day at the same sites. We remain committed to improving women's cricket in this way is unique in the world of sport equipment.
