Troy Cooley will be the interim head coach for the tour of Australia next month in South Africa, but confirmed that he will not seek full-time job to replace Tim Nielsen. Cooley is the head coach at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane, after spending five years as assistant coach for bowling and Nielsen with the national team.
Current assistant coach, Justin Langer and mentor Steve Rixon had two fielding Favorites Interim position after Nielsen was down at the end of the last tour of Sri Lanka. However, Cricket Australia's executive director of cricket Michael Brown said Cooley is a good fit for a stand-in role, which covers both Twenty20s, three ODIs and two tests in South Africa.
"Troy has played this role successfully in the past, and has worked extensively with all the players in Australia and the creation of our younger members of the team of the CA Centre of Excellence," Brown said. "Troy has announced that it will not be coaching role of the applicant, for his significant and important tasks of Excellence. This event, therefore, allow the continuity of the Australian team as they try to hold onto the No.1 ODI ranking and try to climb the rankings ICC Test ".
Rixon should be a serious candidate for full-time position as head coach, while Langer could also be included in the deliberations of Cricket Australia. Cooley, who was in charge of Australia A tour of Zimbabwe earlier this year, said he was happy to assume the interim role.
"I feel excited and comfortable to get to the goalie, knowing that Michael Clarke, Shane Watson and Tim Nielsen were planning the campaign in South Africa for some time," Cooley said. "My immediate task is to reach the speed of their plans and work with the players and support staff to ensure the preparation is there for a successful tour.
"My practical knowledge of the Australian team, and our opposition, without a doubt an asset in the short term, we look to build a successful tour of Sri Lanka. My role is to ensure all players are, what they need to prepare for the Tour, and supervise support staff to ensure the best possible results. "
As a coach, Cooley will be part of the jury and will have a voice in the ODI and T20 squads set for South Africa, which will be announced later this week.
