Akhil Patel was released by Nottinghamshire after confirming that the opener with his left hand will not be offered a new contract at Trent Bridge. Patel, younger brother of England international Samit, have struggled to get out of the Nottinghamshire second XI since the signing of a two-year contract in 2009.

"Akhil had some good scores in our second eleven cricket and league, but he has not scored runs in the championship volume that would justify extending his contract with us," said director of cricket Mick Newell Nottinghamshire. Patel has only three Championship appearances in 2011, managing a high score on the 24th

A mirror image of his brother with the bat, Patel scored a lot of tracks in the junior and Derbyshire with his colleague Tom Poynton, was a member of the ECB under 17 players for the central region in July 2007. He rejoined Nottinghamshire in 2009, after leaving the academy to join the club in Derbyshire, where he made his first class debut in 2007.
