Lancashire v Somerset, Taunton, 3rd day

George Dobell in Taunton

September 14, 2011

Somerset 380 for 5 V and 105 Lancashire 480

The last time they won the Lancashire County Championship outright, Adolf Hitler had just organized the night of long knives, Roosevelt had just launched a "New Deal" and the monster of Loch Ness had just seen the first time. It 'was 1934.

There have been times since, where Lancashire have gone by. They finished second in the championship eight times since 1934 - five times in the last 13 years - and a shared title in 1950. In 2007, also one of the last day fell running desperately short run.

But if 2011 will prove to be another near miss or finally end their 77 years of consecutive disappointment is still uncertain. With one day left of a second absorbent Championship season, remains the Warwickshire and Lancashire locked in battle. It would be foolish to suggest that this is Lancashire win the trophy. For players who have worked tirelessly and for the spectators who have followed every turn, it is very important.

But what happens on the last day, you should do nothing to diminish the fact that Lancashire have enjoyed an excellent season. Whatever happens on the last day, the team, coaches and their supporters can feel justifiably proud.

Several former players have heard it said - unofficially - that this is one of the weakest side Lancashire for many years. And perhaps what rehabilitation, have a point.

However, cricket is a team game. Lancashire and have reached the ultimate goal of the team to become more than the sum of its parts. They are not, by one estimate, a bad team. It was a feeling stressed repeatedly to the three days here. Mangas in Lancashire, for example, no individual scored more than 68 years, however, have all contributed a double-digit scoring. Is believed to be the second time the county realized that in the first innings of a game of first-class opportunity to come against other Sussex at Old Trafford in 1957.

Then, with the desperate to reach a batting bonus point session, the lower order Lancashire - and Glen Chapple and Kyle Hogg in particular - has accelerated selflessly against some negative bowling and field placing defensive. They finally won the fifth spot with just three deliveries of the 110 remaining surplus. This is the first time this season, said the five-point lead at bat in a game. Even Gary Keedy and Simon Kerrigan played a part, adding 57 in just 11 overs by the tenth window to win a first innings lead of 100. Kerrigan, a cricketer of great influence, improving his career-best result for the second straight game.

Paul Horton, meanwhile, characterizes its excellence in the field. He grabbed two other options, including an atrocious effort - diving to his left and sliding catch on the second attempt - in the last moments of the day to get rid of Jos Buttler. Only Daryl Mitchell and Rikki Clarke out most of the catches in the Division this season.

Above all, however, was the vision of Chapple, apparently, difficult to walk only one or two days before, in the office with the new ball. In general, he moved to the front and bowling, as always, it seems, with the pace and skill. Your example can be used to inspire his teammates.

"I think it's torn," Chapple said his hamstring after. "They have a wheelchair ready for me. I did not expect to be able to bowl to be honest. But sometimes a very good physical therapist can not push the pain. I have some recordings I had some serious pain. I do not know how pull up tomorrow. But, fingers crossed, I'll be able to go again. "

Several times during the day he went to Lancashire at the top of the table as the battle was not flowing and Warwickshire. Liam Dawson - a man whose parents are from Lancashire - were certainly doing his best to deny Warwickshire.

For strains, however, despite the victory in this game, probably within reach of Lancashire, the tide had changed in Southampton, and Warwickshire. The truth is that Lancashire's no longer in their own hands. They are in the uncomfortable position of having a relegated side batting for most of the day against the league leaders.

Part of the responsibility fell slowly during the dot-interests against Nottinghamshire. Some blame the surrender of New Road. Most often, however, the total of 10 victories in Lancashire would surely enough to guarantee success.

"We can affect what happens at 100 miles," Chapple said. "We are very confident and positive about our position in this game and that's all we can do. We have shown we are a good team. We did well in all aspects of the game and our commitment is the best we have.

"If someone offers you 10 wins early in the season, you had to bite the hand off. We next season as well. Whatever happens, we had a great year."

This was a day little 'depressing in Somerset. They drive racing, their eyes are already focused on the Champions League and CB40. Murali Kartik finished his first five wicket haul disappointing season, but he was never at his best.

Somerset batting, cut three players of choice, so fragile when they started their second innings. Arul Suppiah was beaten by one that pinch back Chapple clearly marked, before Alex Barrow, for the second time in the match, edged unspecified products in a good off-stump and Chris Jones edged a beauty to it square up.

James Hildreth, beautifully cut, and Jos Buttler resisted for a while. But when Hildreth, head in the air, in charge of the track in an attempt to thrash the ball through the Blackdown Hills and was confused by miles and Butler was brilliant caught by Horton, diving to his left to hold slip on one edge off a delivery that showed significant, was the writing on the wall. Somerset reached five more strains, with only five wickets in hand.

"We have much to do because it's always a good location," continued Chapple. "In the field, to take the three with the new ball was a great effort.

It is remarkable that this land of enchantment began to fill with supporters of Lancashire during the day. Taunton Hotels are full to bursting. They have gathered to witness the coronation or a funeral, however, remains to be seen.
